Why I Quit Roll20

Roll20 Vs Fantasy Grounds | Which is REALLY the Cheapest?

Reviews

  1.
    When it works, its mediocre

As a DM for homebrew games, I used Roll20 for 2+ years. When it works, its OK. When it doesn't, its frustrating. I use a lot of custom rules and they are simply not supported due to a lack of modularity within the system. A simple variant of Proficiency Dice in 5e is outlined in the rules, and even it is hacky and not well supported on Roll20.

The format feels like it was made two decades ago, and the web console spits out warnings and errors left and right. There has even been some conspiracies / drama with some of the higher-ups at Roll20, showing a lack of leadership.

Please, let's let Roll20 die. Support another system.

  • Friend screwed 3/4 of the table out of 1/2 the game.
There are other options: https://roll20.net/. Source: 5 months ago
  • Looking for a DND/TTRPG group
I've used roll20.net up until now. They have a find group feature and a virtual table top with character sheets and dice roller included, so everything you need to play virtually is all on the one site. Source: 5 months ago
  • Iโ€™m here to giveaway $1,500 in RPG goodies to celebrate 1 Year of Roll20 x DriveThruRPG! [Mod Approved]
1 Year Roll20 Pro Subscription ($109 value!) โ€“ use it yourself or give it to your GM! Source: 6 months ago
  • Looking for advice on running DnD game on stream!
There are plenty of D&D software programs out there that are free and paid versions. Many of them with the ability to have friends join and interact with the table. As basic as Tabletop Simulator to Fantasy Grounds (both on steam that I have experience with, not an endorsement). roll20.net being a popular browser based version. Source: 6 months ago
  • I'm looking for someone to teach me how to Play DnD
I have made a character on roll20.net that maybe border line iffy/OP, so I may have to make one that's not. My free time can be a bit unusual at times(it's 12:24AM as I write this)so someone who has similar free times as I do(if your interested let me know and we can talk times), basicly I've been listening to a DnD podcast and I think it sounds fun and I want to try it out Edit: I'm in PST timezone in... • Where can someone who wants to learn DND learn to play?
If you'd like to dip your toe virtually, I suggest trying roll20.net. It's an online browser-based client for tabletop gaming that's basically like having a Zoom meeting but with a screen to share character sheets, maps, etc. The site has a search feature for public games, and you're very likely to find some new-player friendly games. • How do I get into DMing?
Otherwise I'd recommend grabbing the Starter Set and running Mines of Phandelver, possibly on roll20.net if you can't find IRL players. Source: 10 months ago
  • Help Wanted
You can play online no problems, you can use a tool like roll 20 or just hand out in a discord call if you prefer. Also, I disagree about the books, don't buy them without having tried the game, download the basic rules instead. Starting with two people is fine, but if you both enjoy it, I'd definitely recommend finding more players, it's more fun that way. Don't feel pressured to start with a full campaign right... • The ominous reveal 2 hours into the game
I'm using roll20 and epic isometric. Source: 11 months ago
  • Where did you find your D&D group?
Like shmuelr says, check out locally for game shops, hobby stores, even the library may have some information. Bookstores (if they still exist) can be checked out. Then, besides reddit's many communities, search on facebook for groups. Just be specific with what edition you are intending to find. I run an in-person ad&d group so that is really specific, lol. Besides facebook, also check meetup.com and even... Source: 11 months ago
  • Online play?
Roll20 - Free to use, subscription for more options. Source: 11 months ago
  • Wanting to get into the ttrpg but I don't know where to start.
Also, I understand that there is a LFG forum on roll20.net. The roll20.net CP2020 support is not bad, so if you can find a group, you should be able to join. Just remember when playing with randos on the internet, you will have to deal with some people that have no social skills and people spurred on to act out by their anonymity But once you find a good group, it is like gold... • Beginner group trying to play for the first time (online)
I made an account on roll20.net but I don't really know how to start a campaign or what campaigns should we even play as a beginner group. Source: 11 months ago
  • What are some low barrier-to-entry hobbies to get into that are "NYC friendly"?
You can also check out playing online, on roll20.net you can find groups to play with just by signing up. Then it's much like online gaming where you set a time to all meet up virtually. Source: 11 months ago
  • Opt In to the New Toolbar and Layers Redesign
Roll20's new Toolbar and Layers navigation is available for opt-in! Our team has been hard at work and weโ€™re excited to bring it to your table. This is the first step in the redesign, and your feedback directly impacts future updates. Source: 11 months ago
  • Newer players going from 2e to 1e and what VTT to use.
Friends of mine have lots of experience in 2e and 1e, and as a VTT we always used roll20, which is compatible with both systems. Unfortunately, I do not really know Foundry, but afaik roll20 ist also a bit more complex to use in terms of many different spells and attacks. I would suggest that you just create a small example campaign on roll20.net and play a bit around with the character sheets. If that looks... Source: 11 months ago
  • Using the system for high school English course
Furthermore, I have recently come across roll20.net and might attempt to get a classroom into it vs pen & paper. Cheers. Source: 12 months ago
  • Single-player 2D games with tabletop look?
I'm looking for 2D games that have the same perspective as some D&D tabletop websites do, such as Roll20 - (example image). Source: 12 months ago
  • [Online][3.5] New DnD player looking for Assistance.
Like any online experience. You will find good and bad experiences there. Much like on Reddit. But I hope you the best in finding a group that you resonate with.https://roll20.net/. Source: 12 months ago
  • Hi, I'm new to the journey of fibromyalgia but it has a weird prologue that seems unrelated but could be related. Here's my origin story:
Then /the day/ happened. Honestly this day thinking back gets me really worked up because it marked a forever shift in my life. February 10th, 2023, a Friday. I play D&D with my closest friends almost every week, and they've been my best friends since we were in high school so that's well over a decade. I was having a really bad migraine in the early afternoon so I went to lay down for a nap because I was so... Source: 12 months ago
  • I am not a regular on this sub. I just came here to say I watched the DND movie and thoroughly enjoyed it!
