Gaming is fine. For the most part, you just need to install Steam and play your games via Bottles. If you're a newbie, you can install both using Flatpak which is essentially a "one-size fits all App Store for all Linux distro." Just make sure to also install Flatseal to manage permissions, and you're done.

If you have a particular game that you absolutely want/need to play, do a search on the protondb.com or lutris.net and see if there are and install scripts or reports of issues on those games. If it checks out, just go for it, try it. But be prepared that it most likely will require at least some level of tinkering in some games to get them to work properly.

A developer-focused minimalist Linux distro from System 76
For Ubuntu-based, I recommend Pop!_OS, they bring update pretty fast and their Pop!_Shop app store is still one of the best I've ever tried. Also, there is an integrated Factory Reset option that would wipe out your /home user data, so that's very useful for a newbie. Plus, on Ubuntu you get access to deb-get and pacstall which makes finding native apps easy.

Manjaro Linux is a linux distribution which is based on arch linux. It uses the PACMAN package manager.
I recommend trying out Manjaro-Gnome and Garuda Linux as second distro . They're Arch-based, meaning they update more often and sometimes that means unforeseen issues so they're unsuited for first time users, but the Arch User Repository is frankly the most complete collection of softwares I know, and with Pamac you have pretty easy way to install them natively to your system.

Garuda Linux is an appealing Arch Linux based Distro with BTRFS (modern filesystem), Linux-zen kernel, auto snapshots, gaming edition and a lot more bleeding edge features..
