Do genre labels limit music?

  1. DI. FM streams the world's most addictive electronic music. Our radio channels feature world renowned artists, DJs, and the hottest exclusive shows.
Yes. I pay no real attention to them. I go for radio airchecks, archive.org, di.fm, jango, freebie bandcamps, netlabels and such. My life's hobby is to create a database so that my jukebox will play something unfamiliar and never repeat anything. Right now the listening list is 7 years long played 24/7, and it's set to play one thing per year backward in time, so I'm always hearing whatever is new first. Repeating anything happens when I'm portable or if the song appears again in whatever I got. Whatever is in the artist field the genre is the first letter of the name in the artist field. A State of Trance is under A for Armin Van Buuren, Corsten's Countdown is under F for Ferry Corsten. Wave stuff where it's not the English alphabet and numbers go under 0.

  2. Upload unlimited music and share it with friends and fans for free.
Hearthis.at is fantastic for DJ sets, and I get a ton of those from there. I also like mixcloud streams.

  3. Internet Archive is a non-profit digital library offering free universal access to books, movies...
Archive.org is great too but you have to do a lot of organising and finding stuff can be tricky. There's a few collections I follow, like noise_arch (Industrial), rave tapes, and rave archive. I also like their hip hop mixtapes, and the live archive is great -- I'll pick a random artist I've never heard of and pull a few shows. I have a bunch of netlabel stuff for the difficult, avant-jazz thing, drone, etc. -- you know, edgy stuff. My favourite netlabels, although none of them are still going, were Clinical Archives, Resting Bell, TestTube and Silent Flow but I must have 50 or 60 others -- their entire outputs.
