What is the best way to start learning japanese?

Jisho Anki
  1. 1
Powerful and easy-to-use online Japanese-English dictionary with words, kanji and example...
I started by memorizing hiragana and katakana, then I started memorizing kanji while reading grammar guides -Tae Kim's is a fairly popular one, another that I see get recommended is imabi- and picking up manga/books with furigana. If I didn't recognize a word (which...is almost all of them when you're starting out) I'd look it up in a dictionary after using OCR if there wasn't any furigana above it telling me how to read it. I also use this dictionary for sound effects and onomatopoeia.

Anki is a program which makes remembering things easy. Because it's a lot more efficient than traditional study methods, you can either greatly decrease your time spent studying, or greatly increase the amount you learn.

If you want to build your own flashcard deck of words without having to physically write them down, Anki is commonly used and there's several preexisting decks for Japanese, including ones that have the stuff you'd find on the N1-5 (the fluency tests). It even has an Android and iOS app so you can't use "well I'm away from the computer" as an excuse to not study.
