I lost majority of the weight I've lost with "pure" CICO: not limiting/forbidding any particular food or groups of food but meticulously tracking my calories to make sure I'm in a deficit, because this was easiest to me personally. Using things like TDEE calculator to figure out how many calories you burn in a day and an app (like MyFitnessPal or LoseIt!) to track what you eat is a good start, and my only investment was a kitchen scale. I also never went really hard on it, so if I go over here and there it is fine - as long as the general trend is eating less than I burn I'm good to go.
