Plugins4free.com or pluginboutique.com are great places to start looking. I don't really make metal but I use a free distortion plugin called Temper that is pretty good and easy to use.

Surge XT

I would also recommend LABS by Spitfire Audio as it is a continuously expanding set of free instruments (usually orchestral but there are some more experimental ones) which you can use to complement your guitar. There's also plenty of power in the Surge Synth to get any of those atmospheric pads or sweet chunky leads.
