For a secure cloud storage setup, I use Cryptomator, accessible at https://cryptomator.org/, on my Android device, and Mountain Duck, available at https://mountainduck.io/, on my desktop. If you aren't really comfortable with using the terminal, or Linux in general, you might be happier with using WinSCP to access the files and edit them on your local machine. Just make sure you use an editor which properly supports Linux formatting such as VSCode or Notepad++. Personally I prefer to use WinSCP from my Windows computer because you can browser hidden folders to find those hidden files, and if it's a log file you can right-click and select open to view it (or save it to your computer if you prefer). WinSCP includes PuTTY for when you need/want to type commands. Source: over 3 years ago
WinSCP, a popular file transfer utility for Windows, garners favorable public opinion, particularly among users seeking a reliable tool for transferring files securely between local and remote systems. As an open-source client, WinSCP excels in providing functionalities across a variety of protocols such as FTP, FTPS, SCP, SFTP, WebDAV, and S3. This versatility, combined with a user-friendly interface, makes WinSCP the preferred choice for many Windows users looking to manage file transfers efficiently.
The tool shines among competitors like FileZilla, Cyberduck, and Transmit, particularly for its robust scripting capabilities and integration of a command-line interface. These features allow users to automate tasks and manage transfers programmatically, making WinSCP not only a preferred client for manual file transfers but also an integral component in automated workflows and development environments that require regular data synchronization.
In terms of user interface, there are mixed reviews. While some appreciate the straightforward, Windows Explorer-style or dual-pane Commander interface, others consider the interface somewhat cluttered. Despite this, the consensus points towards WinSCP being easy to navigate for users requiring essential file transfer functions. The inclusion of built-in text editing capabilities offers an advantage for users who need to make quick edits directly on the server, setting it apart from competitors that rely on third-party editors.
WinSCP's capability to synchronize files efficiently is well-regarded, with features like 'Synchronization browsing' and 'Compare directories' proving useful for maintaining consistency between directories. For security, the program supports encryption mechanisms and allows users to set a master password to protect sensitive site information. Additionally, a portable mode enhances its utility for users who operate across multiple devices or require a solution on external storage media.
Despite its strengths, WinSCP faces limitations in being a Windows-only application, leaving Mac and Linux users to seek alternatives like Cyberduck and Transmit. However, for Windows users specifically, it often features in top recommendations for FTP clients in articles that review PuTTY alternatives and suggest secure file transfer solutions. The software's firm standing in the community is underscored by its extensive download count, indicating widespread trust and usage.
In summary, WinSCP is respected as a comprehensive file transfer solution, particularly suitable for individuals and businesses operating on Windows. It offers a blend of simplicity and advanced features, catering to both basic users and those with more sophisticated requirements for automation and workflow integration. While not without its critiques, particularly regarding its Windows exclusivity, WinSCP remains a go-to tool for secure and efficient file management in a Windows environment.
