  • Hash Collisions and Exploitations
I wonder if you could construct a hash collision for high pagerank sites in the google (or Bing) index. You would need to know what hash algorithm google uses to store URLs. This is assuming that they hash the URLs for their indexing. Which surely they do. MD5 and SHA1 existed when google was founded, but hash collisions weren't a big concern until later IIRC. You'd want a fast algorithm because you're having to... - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • Is there a way in US libraries to access newspaper websites which are behind a paywall?
If we (the library) want to provide access to something like the nytimes.com or economist.com websites, what we can do is essentially bulk purchase, at some discount, subscriptions that can be claimed by our users. While this may work for a university campus, it doesn't scale well for a public library for both budgetary and logistical reasons. Source: 6 months ago
  • Weirdest bug(?)
I tried to link my friends a NYTimes article but it tells me "www.nytimes.com is blocked. nytimes.com refused to connect. ERR_BLOCKED_BY_RESPONSE" and then automatically tries to load a .onion link in a tor window. Source: 6 months ago
  • drowning in safari tabs
Hello! My goal is to be able to automate tab-closing in Safari. I have hundreds of tab groups in Safari and many contain web pages that I no longer need. It would take me days to organize and manually go through them to close them. For example. I would love to close any tab that contains "gmail.com" or "nytimes.com" etc. Source: 10 months ago
  • Google to block news in Canada over law on paying publishers
It's lazy to know that the NYT writes an article and google search that article. Go to the browser and type nytimes.com. Source: 11 months ago
  • DNS often takes ~5 seconds
I've also noticed that nytimes.com often has a 5 second wait. I'm not sure if that's because they set a 2 minute TTL on their DNS records, or something else is going on. Source: 11 months ago
  • Taylor Swift Has Rocked My Psychiatric Practice
Fyi the archive.org link doesn't work, it sends you to the nytimes.com website. Source: 12 months ago
  • What are web developers and agencies using to build their clients sites?
I run a majority of my client work on pantheon.io - you can read a case study of a high traffic site I launched there, 9 years ago, that handled a homepage link from nytimes.com with zero problems https://pantheon.io/blog/tavern-green-gets-details-right-pro-website-alphex-pantheon. • It’s been very hard growing my project
    - I like the MorningBrew format but this format is low value added, its like swiping through the front page of nytimes.com, I get interesting stuff but there is very marginal value behind. I think it will be hard to grow this way as you'd need to send every day and will need momentum to push you past the cold start problem... Source: 12 months ago
  • George Santos may be headed to jail
I hate to even post this since you are doing the right thing and we do want to pay to continue to get quality news coverage from the NYT. But you can just disable javascript on nytimes.com and read entire articles. It's a useful trick for people who are financially struggling and can't afford it. Source: 12 months ago
  • Kate Sillars Day
My review of this event was granted by my subscription to nytimes.com. I looked at all the relevant chess articles beginning in April, 1962. I was interested in the columns by I. A. Horowitz, in particular, which started around this time. Source: about 1 year ago
  • VERDICT: GUILTY on ALL CHARGES
According to the NY Times, the request was granted, so the worst sentence at this point is LWP. (I have to admit I did the fist-pumping "YES!!!" routine when it popped on nytimes.com.). Source: about 1 year ago
  • NyTimes Paywall Bypass
You have to disable javascript for the New York Times. If you use javascript for other things and have created an exception to block javascript on nytimes.com then you may have to *ALSO* block javascript at www.nytimes.com which is weird, but it works. Other possible suspect is turning javascript off and on again? I'm not super computer techy, but it worked! Source: about 1 year ago
  • [OC] A polarized media landscape: MSNBC vs Fox News - What stories are they highlighting or omitting over the last week (April 7 to April 13)? What are the focal points between the left and right on divided topics?
Data: Headlines from nytimes.com and msnbc.com (Viewable here). Source: about 1 year ago
  • CMV: Dental care should be included in medical insurance as preventative care, and not be a separate insurance plan.
Apparently that was my free nytimes.com article for the month. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Fordism Didn't Die; It Just Became "American"
Read this one, which I sourced from a NY Times article posted to nytimes.com on Nov. 29, '17, by P. Baker and E. Sullivan:. Source: about 1 year ago
  • I asked GPT-4 to summarise a web page that was created in the past few days by providing the URL, and it did....but i have yet to have access to plugins that give it web access
At first I made up an nytimes.com link and it said it wasn't valid. Then I changed the URL structure to pass for something from their technology section and it worked. It admits it made up the summary when probed further. Source: about 1 year ago
  • anon questions the female shooter
Went on nytimes.com. Not a word about transformers. Source: about 1 year ago
  • NYT cover story about "worrisome lack of production capacity" of U.S. ammo pretty much confirms all the fears of a capitalist "military-industrial complex", but hardly anyone noticed or cares. Most readers just shrug and say to send more money to the weapons manufacturers.
This wasn't just some random NYT article, but on the top of the front page. Here's a screenshot of nytimes.com taken on Friday, Mar 24, 2023, with this article circled in red:. Source: about 1 year ago
  • [OC] NYTimes vs NYPost - What stories or topics are they pushing or omitting over the last week (Mar 9 to Mar 16)? What are the focal points between the left and right on divided topics?
Data: Headlines from nytimes.com and nypost.com (Viewable here). Source: about 1 year ago
  • Is there any way to get full links in address bar suggestions
It is exactly the problem I have. When I start typing nytimes.com, I expect it to auto complete to nytimes.com/games/wordle. Source: about 1 year ago
