  • Weather forecasts have become much more accurate
The Dark Sky (now Apple Weather) acquisition somehow went worse than those IBM ones. Not only is it less accurate than Dark Sky used to be, it’s somehow managed to be less accurate than pre-acquisition Apple Weather. https://weather.gov/ still works (type your zip code into the box on the top left), thankfully. I’m worried weather.gov is only one election cycle away from being decommissioned. Lobbyists from... - Source: Hacker News / about 2 months ago
  • Weather.gov 2.0
Some other kind soul , which led to which led to https://weathergov-design.app.cloud.gov/point/35.198/-111.651 containing the banner "This is a beta site. https://weather.gov/ remains the authoritative source of weather information." so chances are it's that https://weathergov-staging.app.cloud.gov/point/35.198/-111.651... - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago
  • Where to watch weather forecasts
I'll leave one more source, which is your weather.com - which takes their data from weather.gov and tweaks it slightly. Source: 5 months ago
  • Do Floridians trust weather forecasts? Worried about my upcoming bachelor party.
That's nearly a week out, the weather in Florida is extremely bipolar. Until you are within ~2 days of the day you're looking to forecast, it probably won't be accurate, and even then it could change on a dime. But when you do get to point in time, you can use https://weather.gov to get the forecast from the local NWS office. Source: 5 months ago
  • Everyone should wait before buying electron
You are taking a government-run website and comparing it to a GAME, man some of you kids are truly detached from the real-world jesus christ. Also weather.gov isn't a paid service, its free... Source: 5 months ago
  • Which route is the safest to get to Portland in the dead of winter in a Honda civic?
Check the weather prediction on more than one website over several days just before you start. I use weather.gov and weather.com. Are the forecast getting stormier or less? Source: 6 months ago
  • Weather forecast workaround
I posted recently about publishing my process that retrieves weather forecast data from weather.gov's api and forwards to your carrier's email-to-SMS gateway (arriving at your LP in an easy to read format), but curiously soon after my messages were no longer being forwarded. Tmobile said that they were likely flagged as spam but that- even if they removed the flags- they (and the other carriers) were preparing to... Source: 6 months ago
  • Filtering results using ImportXML
New to using the ImportXML and hitting a couple of hurdles. Hoping to pull a specific day's forecast from weather.gov (eg. https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=40.85889&lon=-74.05667). Source: 6 months ago
  • Need help on Direction
Working with a professor to build a routing application based on weather. Currently using Google Maps API and weather.gov for data, does anyone know good alternatives to both where I can find data that granular for forecasts up to 72 hours like weather.gov provides. ALso any routing APIs to get familiarized with? Source: 7 months ago

  • Considering moving to Indiana from Florida
Familiarize yourself with the various types of weather watches, advisories, and warning we have up here. (weather.gov) will help with that. A weather radio and or having your phone set to allow for all emergency and weather notification is a necessity. From tornado watches to warnings, various watches and warnings for a variety of winter weather. Watch = conditions are present for the development of "x"... Source: 10 months ago
  • Advice for Upcoming Heat Wave
My family and I are staying at Upper Pines for a week starting this Friday. I've been monitoring the weather at weather.gov, and the current forecast for Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon temps is 104/108/108/104. Ouch. Source: 10 months ago
  • “It used to snow more when I was a kid.”
There are a ton of questions that can be taken into account here even if its from weather.gov. Source: 10 months ago
  • LPT Request: What is an app that everyone should have on their phone?

  • I’m guessing these guys are freaking out, the whole state is pretty brown and the corn fields don’t look great
According to weather.gov, the accumulated precipitation is nowhere close to being as bad as the 1895 drought. Source: 11 months ago

  • Have you felt or seen the effects of Canadian wildfires yet?
Whenever I see stories like this, I go to weather.gov and check out their GOES-16 image: https://cdn.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES16/ABI/CONUS/GEOCOLOR/20231581926_GOES16-ABI-CONUS-GEOCOLOR-2500x1500.jpg. Source: 11 months ago
  • Anyone getting out for a hike in eastern CO this weekend? Where you headed?
This weather pattern is a little weird. The current surface weather map is interesting to say the least. Like I said, just check the NWS site before you head out. There are a lot of locations in their database, so you can get a fairly pinpoint forecast. Before he left Channel 4, Chris Spears used to maintain a hiking weather page, but it looks like they took it down. Source: 11 months ago
  • Library to retrieve data from apis.
Retries. If I don't get a 200, I increment a fail counter and sleep for 1 and retry. 3 fails and I keep the old data and log that it's stale. Seems to work. The weather.gov site is pretty flakey but I can focus it on a specific coordinate, not a zip code, so I like it. Source: 11 months ago
  • What is the most accurate weather forecasting site?
I use weather.gov and find it to be fairly accurate as far as overall conditions and timings of weather. I finally broke down and got SkySight and have found it amazing for thermal forecasts and details I have no idea what to do with... But it really sucks to be able to tell what day on the weekend is going to have better overall weather so I can plan my weekend. Source: 11 months ago
  • What is the most accurate weather forecasting site?
Does anyone know how useful the free national weather service site is in the US (https://weather.gov , https://beta.aviationweather.gov/, etc)? They seem to have endless information if you click far enough. Source: 11 months ago
