• Why do developers so often not tag their games as metroidvanias?

  Warzone 2100 (Free) is a real time strategy from 1999 that's since been adopted by open source, and thus still gets periodic updates. It has a solid campaign with a fair amount of variety. Zero-k (Free) may also be of interest, and though it's primarily multiplayer oriented it has a rather lengthy optional campaign that's good for developing RTS fundamentals. • Advice for a few mechanics

  Starcraft 2 is apparently free to play https://starcraft2.com/en-us/, so you can try that. I've come to dislike RTS games that use units whose main purpose is to collect resources around the map and/or build your buildings, so I never got into Starcraft. • Unpopular Opinion: DOTA 2, is not a Real Time Stratagy game.

  Dota 2 is self described as "...the deepest multi-player action RTS game ever made...", its Steam user-defined tags include RTS which clearly indicates that this is an unpopular opinion to DOTA players. Now I am not here to disagree that DOTA is real time, what I take issue with is its labelling as a strategy game.
