First, make sure the game is running on dedicated GPU and not integrated. Second, install Sodium + Lithium + Phosphor. Source: 12 months ago
But if you're looking to get a little more performance out of Minecraft, you should add the Sodium mod. Source: 12 months ago

If its FPS, then I recommend installing some fps mods like Rubidium, or entity culling. If you're on fabric then Sodium, heres a video with other FPS mods combined with sodium for max performance. Source: over 1 year ago
Thats something to do with rendering, You can install Rubidium, And entity culling to help with framerate. Of course if you're on fabric theres sodium which is a really good fps booster. Source: over 1 year ago

I am going to assume your client needs the optimizations not the server otherwise I would recommend paper. If you are looking for client sided optimization I'm going to recommend things like sodium, Iris Sharders, and lithium. I have used Optifine in the past and found it to be sub par when compared to those three but you might find different. I am going to recommend Atlaunch as Ive found it to be better than... Normal Minecraft, you’ll get better FPS with Sodium alone and if you want even more FPS there are mod packs like Adranaline that give more FPS, if you want friend systems, cosmetics, emotes and also your friends joining your world just install the Essential mod and all the other mods in those clients you can get. Try Fabric loader + Sodium + Iris and whatever shaders you prefer like BSL. I get a usable 20 fps (150 fps without shaders) with M1 MBA on complex Mumbo Jumbo Redstone World map and 500 fps (1400 fps without shaders) with SFF desktop. Source: over 1 year ago
Fabric has its own optimization mods. For performance, there is a great Sodium mod. To optimize the Lithium game world. To optimize Phosphor light. These are the main Minecraft optimization mods for Fabric. For shaders there is an Iris mod. Also, if you're playing with Fabric mods, don't forget the Indium rendering mod. Source: over 1 year ago
Sodium it would go to like 300 FPS or maybe just 250 FPS and with Sodium Extra you can disable rain, with Continuity mod it adds Optifine’s connected textures and Essential is a quality of life mod that adds amazing essential features to the game which include the ability to zoom. Install Sodium for good performance and Iris if you'd like to use shaders. You also need this fix if you're gonna play on Mac. Source: over 1 year ago
I just noticed your sodium version is for 1.16.5 download the right one from https://modrinth.com/mod/sodium. Source: over 1 year ago
I guess OP has the 1.16.5 version because that's the only version of sodium available on the de facto archived CurseForge page. Everyone, please read the notice at the top of that page and use Modrinth. Source: over 1 year ago
