If you're wanting campgrounds then I check recreation.gov and reserveamerica.com. For some state parks, you have to reserve online by midnight the night before. Others you can book same day. Recreation.gov will show you nearby campgrounds that have first come first served but there's always the chance they may be full. Source: 11 months ago
Check out reserveamerica.com for state and federal campgrounds. Also if you search google for BLM (bureau of land management, not Black Lives Matter) , you can find information about dispersed camping. Source: 11 months ago

Yes, recreation.gov for reserving most federal spots. Some NP have private vendor operating their campgrounds (e.g. You have to use https://www.xanterra.com/ for Yellowstone). Over here in North Carolina, our state parks use reserveamerica.com and many other states use it too. I've not had too much trouble with reserveamerica nor recreation.gov - other than some sites being tagged incorrectly (tent only but not... Source: about 1 year ago
Recreation.gov for the national forest and national park campgrounds along the way, reserveamerica.com for a lot of the state park campgrounds. I think TN Virginia state parks are not on reserveamerica, some of the other states you might have to look up each individually. Then there's also some KOA campgrounds as well as Hipcamp too. I also sometimes check out reserveamerica.com for state parks last minute if I can’t find a federal site. Source: over 1 year ago
State park campsites for Falls Lake and Jordan Lake are available via reserveamerica.com but there is one campground that I think offers on site first come first served at Jordan lake. Sometimes you can get lucky and get a cancelation that comes open but most weekends are booked solid weeks in advance. Source: almost 2 years ago

Check freecampsites.net as well as Campedium, iOverlander, etc. For recommended free camping locations. Get a tent (Coleman Sundome for 50 bucks) and go to freecampsites.net and Campendium find some places. Most state parks are in the $20-$30 range for campsites. A lot are on reserveamerica.com (many state park systems are on there, some use their own reservation system). Got to recreation.gov for national park and national forest campground reservations.
