I'm going to not answer your question and provide you with one anyway: experiment with QLC+. It's a lighting software, but it's very flexible with midi. On the last of the bottom tabs, you'll be able to select your device and visually see if some input is happening & from the Virtual board you can make a fader (or any control, really) to assign it to your device & check if moving your fader moves the one on screen... QLC+ - Free, open source, it's even got an FX engine! Source: over 1 year ago
If you're willing to upgrade to serious (read: fun) lighting devices, and get to experiment, I'd suggest you turn to DMX-controlled ones (can be cheap, you just get what you pay for); then buy the smallest, cheapest USB-to-DMX adapter and install QLC+. Source: almost 2 years ago
What's the best DE, or possibly full distro, to benefit from it currently in your opinion? I know I'll use it with QLC+ & MagicQ. My workhorse L460 thinkpad runs Arch, btw, standard "don't-get-in-my-way" gnome. Source: about 2 years ago
QLC+ (https://qlcplus.org/) is free and pretty easy to get started with for some basic lighting control. This should work with any USB to DMX dongle or other interface. Source: about 2 years ago
But what about practice? (And starting small). On the hardware side, I'd say start with cheap stuff, in Morocco (Rabat) I put everybody on QLC+ & an $20 usb-to-dmx adapter from China. From then on, they can follow amateur groups when they play in small theatre/cafés with any LED fixtures, anything from the most basic setup, you can do better with your laptop, QLC and that adapter. And in the case described here,... Source: over 2 years ago
QLC+ should allow you at least to try stuff, check your dongle and compare. It's FOSS! Do not try the beta (alpha?) Q5, it is promising but absolutely not ready. Source: over 2 years ago
QLC+ may be a good starting point. The software is open source and free and supports a wide variety of DMX interfaces and fixtures. Source: over 2 years ago
Your barebone cheapest option is a laptop with the open-source project QLC+, and the cheapest usb-dmx dongle from China at about $20; QLC+ is so versatile that you create your own console on it, and is the most compliant software with any kind of output devices. As output devices go, should you wish to be fancy, the DMXKing Micro is ~$70 something at the moment and has been exceptionally reliable in my experience. Source: over 2 years ago
Piping the midi to a program that allows mapping to DMX. (I *believe* I used QLC but it was several years ago, and it's a bit hazy.). Source: over 2 years ago
