At the beginning of September, I saw a post from Johannes Koch about [self-hosting CodeCommit alternative (https://lockhead.info/index.php/2024/09/03/a-self-hosted-codecommit-alternative/). Then I realised, that I'm using my home, not such a popular, but very nice and solid git repository system. To be more precise, much more than a git server. Let's welcome OneDev. - Source: dev.to / over 1 year ago
In order to host a โsimpleโ Git setup Iโve recently made this repository public that deploys Gitness as a Git Repository on ECS. It will cost you roughly 50 USD/month. See also a relevant blog post. Inspired by this, Jakub Wolynko did the same thing for Onedev โ please see https://github.com/3sky/onedev-on-ecs if you would like to try that out. - Source: dev.to / over 1 year ago
An option I don't see often brought up but I use it myself and love it is https://github.com/theonedev/onedev. It has its own CICD implementation along with a visual interface to configure the tasks. The developers are very responsive when issues are reported, and it has a very good code search engine with symbol recognition. Source: almost 3 years ago

I'm with /u/Ruben_NL on the reasoning why I've stuck with GitLab (because of the nice and flexible CI system), however I frequently browse /r/selfhosted and have seen OneDev come up - It seems like it's more lightweight and has some CI functionality, the question would come down to whether or not OneDev's CI system is as flexible as GitLab CI. OneDev is gaining a commendable position in the landscape of self-hosted Git solutions, carving out a niche for itself with a robust feature set that extends beyond traditional version control systems. As detailed in numerous discussions across technical forums and blog posts, OneDev's appeal lies in its comprehensive offerings, notably its built-in CI/CD capabilities, Kanban support, and an impressive code search functionality.
One of the standout features of OneDev is its advanced code search mechanism. The platform leverages Lucene indexing to incrementally manage code search, facilitating exceptionally fast search capabilities even for extensive repositories like Linux. This feature is particularly appreciated among developers who require efficient navigation and retrieval of code assets, as described in articles exploring GitHub alternatives.
Another significant aspect of OneDev is its visual job/pipeline designer, which simplifies CI/CD processes. This feature, coupled with an intuitive user interface, enhances the usability of OneDev, making it a practical choice for developers seeking an integrated development environment. The latest version, 7.1, introduces further enhancements such as a command palette and repository mirroring, demonstrating ongoing development and responsiveness to user needs.
The reception of OneDev within the software development community has been primarily positive, with users frequently highlighting its lightweight nature and solid performance. Many users appreciate the responsiveness of the developers to reported issues, indicating a community-oriented approach that fosters trust and continuous improvement. The platform is also gaining traction as a reliable alternative to more established services like GitLab, especially in scenarios where self-hosting is preferred.
In comparison to competitors such as Gitea, GitKraken, and BitBucket, OneDev differentiates itself by offering a singular platform combining version control with project management and automation tools like Kanban and CI/CD. Its performance efficiency is often cited as superior, with comparisons indicating faster UI responsiveness than GitLab. This makes it an attractive option for teams looking for an all-in-one solution that doesnโt compromise on speed or reliability.
The flexibility offered by OneDev's deployment options is another advantage. It can be self-hosted on AWS using ECS, allowing organizations to seamlessly integrate it into their existing infrastructure. This has been emphasized in blog posts detailing deployment experiences, underscoring its adaptability for both personal projects and enterprise environments.
Overall, public opinion suggests that OneDev is a promising and effective self-hosted Git solution that combines crucial development tools into a single, efficient platform. Its continued development and active community engagement indicate its potential for further growth and adoption in a market dominated by larger players. For developers and teams looking for a feature-rich, self-managed Git alternative, OneDev certainly merits consideration.
