Prior to 3.1.x the dat subdirectory didn't exist yet but data.base was present somewhere, possibly in the src subdirectory instead. I don't know whether it goes as far back as hack 1.x or even nethack 2.x. The source code for a bunch of old versions is present at https://nethackwiki.com/ but I'm not sure whether the data files are all there too. The source code for the most recent released version (3.6.7) is... Source: 11 months ago
I am not sure what extra benefits the Steam version has, but the game is available for free either as download on nethack.org, or to play online at something like alt.org/nethack or hardfought.org. Source: 11 months ago
You don't even need two people to play D&D, Nethack is great! Source: about 1 year ago
I've always been fond of the last quote on nethack.org. Source: about 1 year ago
It was discussed here last fall, when the home page for nethack.org was updated to mention it. The blurb includes a few other tiny screen shots and says the exhibit is scheduled to be open until mid-July. Source: about 1 year ago
That said, I've seen people getting into Nethack and/or Angband without any previous exposure, and these games are not... Easy to begin with. Source: over 1 year ago
Also: not similar in gameplay: but NetHack is another obscure open source game I enjoy. Source: over 1 year ago
The edition for version 3.6.6 is available online at the nethack.org website but I don't have the actual URL. I assume hardfought makes editions available for each of the versions it offers, at least plain text copies. Source: over 1 year ago
You can view the original pic the OP posted along with others on the main page at https://nethack.org/. Source: over 1 year ago
You should update to 3.6.6. nethack.org doesn't provide a binary distribution for Mac but you can use Homebrew or Macports. They're both free package manager tools for OSX that let you download and install programs and both offer prebuilt nethack 3.6.6. Source: over 1 year ago
Those are my thoughts, because simply put "this looks like I cant play it." I can however play things that are like the game Rogue. I can play NetHack. I can play Stay Safe. I can play POWDER. I can play Brogue,. Source: almost 2 years ago
Real roguelikes are turn and tile based games that mirror the gameplay of the game Rogue. Things like Pixel Dungeon, things like Nethack, things like DCSS. Source: almost 2 years ago
Roguelikes as a turn based genre matter because they allow people who need turn based genres to keep gaming as a hobby to do so. I'm half blind and one-armed. Ten Minutes To Dawn isnt playable to me, and it took a few watches to see what's going on gameplay wise. Nethack however is playable to me. DCSS however is playable to me. POWDER however is playable to me. Dungeons of Dredmor however is playable to me. Source: almost 2 years ago
Being able to show the score as part of status is a conditional feature based on SCORE_ON_BOTL. That's disabled by default; I don't know whether any of the binary distributions from nethack.org enable it. The '#version' command shows "score on status line" when the build makes it available. BUT the real champ is probably NetHack (1987-now) http://nethack.org. Source: over 2 years ago
NetHack - Feels heavily inspired by early versions of DnD. Has a very high level of item interaction complexity. Winning will probably require you to read spoilers, so avoid this game if you want something that holds your hand. The object of the game is to dive into the Dungeons of Doom and try to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor for your god. You'll collect all manner of weapons, armor, wands, scrolls, potions,... I just checked the md5 checksum of my file and it matches that listed on the nethack.org site. Source: over 2 years ago
By the way, you can still install and play it if you care to. NetHack. Source: over 2 years ago
Definitely NetHack. It not only has themed levels, it has areas that are completely different from each other even at the early game. Some of these are optional (mines, sokoban, etc.) but some are necessary at midgame (quest level, Gehennom, the astral planes, etc.). I'd recommend downloading the latest version. The Windows download page at nethack.org has a link to another page which describes how to run nethack with a command line argument that causes it to list the various locations instead of starting play. Source: almost 3 years ago
Nethack uses a keyboard (mouse not required) and is turn-based where every keystroke is a single turn. You can pause the game forever, save, pickup exactly where you left off. nethack is an old old wizards and magic game (based on older wizards and magic games) that is incredibly complex and detailed, and is an engaging challenge/struggle through most levels. Oh yeah, and if you die, that's it. No second... Source: about 3 years ago
