I started with Droidcam during the pandemic and switched to Iriun. Currently using it with an old iPhone SE over USB, but also used with Huawei P20 Pro. Not many features, but just works. https://iriun.com/. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
I clamp the lasergun and my phone (with little stands and clamps like this , with the phone's cam pointing at the gun "nozzle") on my adjustable standing desk, then sit with my back in front of it, looking at my laptop on my lap that shows a stream from my smartphone cam (iriun.com). For webcam I suggest a cellphone(s) and the droidcam or iruin software. Plenty of tutorials on youtube on how to set it up. Its pretty easy and I've used some very old cellphones with decent picture quality. Source: over 3 years ago

I recently bought a Mac Mini M1 (arriving this week!) and had the same question regarding webcam with the same budget. I also checked those cameras and couldn't get myself into buying any, they jsut had poor reviews overall and the support for M1 chips wasn't clear (I think some updates on logitech firmware fixed the issues). Eventually I found we can use our phones as a webcam and since I have an old iPhone 6s... Source: about 4 years ago
I had the same problem and followed the guide linked above. Didn't work. I ended up switching to Iriun. I had been using DroidCam since march 2020. Source: about 4 years ago

Don't use iVCam. Use Iruin - it works best over your phones USB connection. Source: over 4 years ago
Naturally at times when I am just having a call that I use the camera built into my laptop, but for recording and streams I actually use my phone camera. Uh huh, my phone camera. The phone is kind of the least relevant part as any modern phone camera is decent, but my current is a One Plus Nord. The in-built camera software does do a lot of annoying auto focusing that can sometimes make my video have this odd kind... - Source: dev.to / over 4 years ago

I've totally not tried this, but .. You could try an alternative to Reincubate Camo that works under Linux on your chromebook.. https://alternativeto.net/software/camo/ indicates Iriun Webcam & DroidCam look the most solid. I'm thinking you may also need to use the linux version of Zoom or run Meet from a browser within linux as well though just incase the camera is only detected inside the linux vm/container. Iriun Webcam is a prominent application designed to enable users to transform their smartphones into functional webcams. As part of the broader category of WebCamera Apps, it positions itself among competitors such as DroidCam, iVCam, Camo, and others. Based on an analysis of recent mentions and contextual discourse, it is evident that public opinion about Iriun Webcam is multi-dimensional, highlighting both positive attributes and areas needing enhancement.
One of the most consistently praised features of Iriun Webcam is its straightforward installation and ease of use. Users appreciate the app's capability to connect smartphones as webcams over Wi-Fi or USB, available across platforms like Windows, Mac, and Linux. This cross-platform versatility is further highlighted by its interoperability with major video conferencing applications such as Zoom, Discord, and Teams. The setup process is described as intuitive, with the application reliably detecting connected devices once both are on the same network.
When addressing performance, users frequently commend Iriun Webcam for its efficient transformation of smartphone cameras into high-quality video sources, which is particularly valuable during streaming or video calls. The ability to create a virtual camera on operating systems extends its utility, capturing the interest of users who aim to leverage older phones for current needs without investing in additional hardware.
Despite its advantages, Iriun is not without limitations. Critics point out the lack of advanced features compared to competitors like iVCam, which offers an ad-free experience during live streams and additional functionalities. Some users express frustration over the absence of certain customizable settings or more sophisticated streaming features, which could enhance its viability as a professional-grade tool. Nevertheless, Iriunโs primary appeal seems to revolve around its accessibility and reliable performance rather than extensive features.
The community feedback for Iriun highlights an additional aspect of compatibility. Many users appreciate its integration with older and newer smartphone models, as evidenced by its successful operation on devices ranging from iPhone SE to Huawei P20 Pro. Users also report a seamless experience with Mac systems, including M1 chips, although some initial hurdles with permissions and virtual camera setup are noted on macOS.
As a free tool, Iriun successfully fulfills its core promise of transforming smartphones into webcams with minimal hassle, making it a popular choice among users seeking cost-effective solutions. While not as feature-rich as some competitors, its reliability and cross-platform support ensure that it remains a viable option for many. The applicationโs appeal is strongly tied to its simplicity and the robust, consistent performance it offers, even if some users turn to alternatives for more advanced needs. Looking forward, embracing feature enhancements and addressing ad-related concerns without compromising its ease of use could further solidify Iriun Webcamโs position in the market.
