  I use Private Internet Access and they provide the necessary .ovpn file to insert into the container. That goes somewhere in the /config folder I believe, it's in the docs. Then I added auth-user-pass "filename" (I used credentials.conf) into the .ovpn so it can log itself in and get the VPN up.   In the router they show my public different than my actual public IP. In the router's admin panel, it shows my public IP like 39.xxx.xxx.xxx but when I check on ipinfo.io or ifconfig.co it shows something like 45.xxx.xxx.xxx.
