  • Order/license chaos for VMware products after Broadcom takeover
We use ganeti and I'm ridiculously happy with it. When I came on board we were using ganeti for dev/stg and VMWare for production. But the difficulty of monitoring VMWare (we were moving away from SAN to local storage, and doing a RAID array monitor was a PITA) and administering (via Windows GUI, which I had to run via a VM on my Linux workstations), plus the licensing weirdness (clusters of size 5 were a sweet... - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
  • VMware is now part of Broadcom
Yep, happily using https://ganeti.org/ and KVM live migrations - mirrors across hosts. - Source: Hacker News / 5 months ago
  • Learning more about KVM, oVirt or stick to Proxmox?
It's more focused on clusters, but you could check out Ganeti. Source: 9 months ago
  • Proxmox, CEPH and kubernetes
I've been using CEPH as a backend for Ganeti storage for a long time. It's not as complex as some people like to make it out to be. But just like an distributed redundant storage, you really want to have networking that has closer to the bandwidth of your storage devices in order to make it feel like local storage speeds. Usually means 10Gbe or better. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Virtualization without shared storage
Try Ganeti. It can build VM clusters using DRBD or Ceph (or both at the same time if you want). It takes the pain out of managing DRBD. Source: about 1 year ago
  • The Infra at my new role is too polished.. I'm struggling to find things to do
If you're interested in Ceph and proxmox, check out Ganeti. Source: over 1 year ago
  • How would you approach failover with KVM and two physical servers with local storage?
I've used Ganeti with DRBD for block device storage for this exact kind of setup. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Anyone know of a decent enterprise linux crash course?
I do run a hobby cluster on Ganeti. Ganeti was a very early open source enterprise hyperconverged system. I have a little toy cluster running Ceph for block storage. Has been running for a decade or so. Source: over 1 year ago
  • When do you transition from unnamed prototype to named project?
I like how Ganeti was named. It was chosen because it was the best random name and had 0 result in Google at that time. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Any viable alternatives to vSphere Fault Tolerance?
I've been doing live migrations with Ganeti for ages. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Larry Ellison on cloud computing - has this aged well?
As for private cloud VM orchestration, I've been using Ganeti for quite a while. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • Recommendations for a 3 node VM Cluster(Not vSphere)?
Ganeti and Ceph is what I've been running for 10 years. Very stable, reliable. I use kvm as the backing hypervisor. Source: about 2 years ago
  • How do cloud provider run their user frontend (and backend)?
The next layer up, VM provisioning, has other systems like Ganeti, VMware, Proxomox, etc. Source: about 2 years ago
  • What am I looking for? Kubernetes maybe? idk
Https://ganeti.org is an open source solution that does exactly what you want at with VM failover using LVM+DRBD. Source: about 2 years ago
  • Simple private cloud solution
Ganeti is the private internal cloud built by Google before GCP was created. Very stable, 100% open source, still being maintained. Source: over 2 years ago

Introduction to Top Open Source Virtualization Tools
For Ganeti to work, virtualization software must be pre-installed on the servers. Once installed, it assumes management of the virtual instances; Ganeti handles startup, shutdown, OS installation, migration, disk creation, and can be used to preemptively relocate a VM off a physical machine that is failing. Ganeti can be used for both single-host management, like Xen Tools or Libyirt, and large-scale computing on...
