Calling an API and receiving/storing its data is actually pretty simple as long as the API is designed correctly. In this case, we're going to look at an API called free GIO IP. Here we are able to get the general location (country, state, city, longitude, latitude) of an IP address. - Source: dev.to / about 2 years ago
For my project, the API doesn't work and returns nothing, so I had to hardcode the properties to show how the website would look if the API would work. This link https://freegeoip.app/ says you need to obtain API key, which needs to be added to the end of the API call. - Source: dev.to / about 2 years ago
Constructor() { super(); this.locationEndpoint = 'https://freegeoip.app/json/'; this.long = null; this.lat = null; this.city = null; this.state = null; }. - Source: dev.to / about 2 years ago
In the constructor you must set your locationEndpoint. You can do so by entering: this.locationEndpoint = 'https://freegeoip.app/json/'. The locationEndpoint is what is going to allow for a connection to the necessary software. - Source: dev.to / about 2 years ago
As OpenWeather doesn't have its own geolocation feature, we decided to first ping FreeGeoIP on pageload via AJAX. Their free API allows 15,000 requests per hour and provides plenty of useful information that gives us a best guess at the visitor's location, including city, state and country names, as well as latitude/longitude coordinates (which we could then pass to OpenWeather to ensure accuracy). - Source: dev.to / over 2 years ago
When the client is instantiated, it uses freegeoip.app to determine the GPS coordinates of the client running the software. Then when the IsIPAddressNear() method is called, the library then looks up the GPS coordinates of the IP address specified, then compares the coordinates down to the specified decimal point (the library's usage of sensitivity) and determines if the IP address' location is close to yours. - Source: dev.to / over 2 years ago
