I'm also a 45 yo. Dude who's spent a lot off time off the bike due to injury or illness. I don't race and I'd say I'm more competitive with myself than others. Within Colorado, the COTrex app is pretty good. Elsewhere, I've had good luck with ridewithgps.com premium to explore and find popular routes.
