For a real 'ease them into it' experience, there's written realms, which has a lovely modern UI. However, I did find that once you get past the tutorial it's a little confusing/sparse. Similar goes for Genesis - beautifully remade tutorial, great ascii map etc. Extremely old, so a lot of detail, but also a bit overwhelmingly huge and sprawling once you're out there. • Any search filters you would like to see MUDstats include?
Written Realms has a great playable experience in-browser, even on a phone. I'm not sure if there are others with a similar mobile-friendly web client. Having a client-free mobile experience like that is a long term goal of mine for the mud I'm working on, but it is tough on a 25 year old codebase that was designed for telnet. :).
