I'm practicing my JavaScript skills and I am building a simple REST API. I'm using Sinatra for the back and and all that does is is define some end points and return JSON. I then use a JavaScript file to call `fetch` on the server and then update/change and display the page using that. At the moment I'm only doing GET requests but will look at POST later. Flask is simple and lightweight and as you said it give you flexibility. But if you want to have something that give you more flexibility and control over everything else besides the routing and server loop I would suggest bottle.
