I managed to solve it by generating a bitmap font with the Shoebox. It automatically trims every character in a font thus removing the empty space. I can't figure it out why some websites (and app) are not correctly displaying things when mullvadvpn is active. The one website (and only, so far) that is giving me problems is https://500px.com/ which doesn't load pictures. Same thing with the app on Android.
