  • Struggling as a DM to handle VTT
Shmeppy is particularly good for little to no prep time play. Not free though. Source: about 1 year ago
  • What digital tool do you need as a GM/Player ?
You probably already heard about this one, but just in case, I have heard good things about https://shmeppy.com/ for this sort of purpose. It is not free though, and I have not had a chance to try it out myself yet. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Alternatives to roll20?
I really like shmeppy. It's got a very intuitive and fast user interface, great for rules light games and maps that you improvise as you play. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Running a dungeon virtually
I converted my in-person game to full virtual at the end of The Before Times and it’s been fairly pain-free. We use Discord for voice chat and dice rolls, and Shmeppy (https://shmeppy.com/) for maps. Its somewhat low fidelity but it works for most dungeons you’ll do. Tokens, fog of war, etc. It’s not free either but $5/month is cheaper than the cost of [insert nerd food stereotype here] every week 🤷🏼‍♂️. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Ask HN: Companies of one, what is your tech stack?
Https://shmeppy.com A single node process serves everything on a Ubuntu digital ocean server. It’s managed by the daemon utility. PostgreSQL holds all the data. There’s some significant in-memory caching in node. The server code is written in typescript and JavaScript. During deploys I t’s transpired on my laptop and then rsynced to the server. • Made a Custom GPT4 that functions as a DM for DnD 5E.
So I added the pdf for the player rulebook, monster manual, and command cheatsheet for the avrae discord bot found on dndbeyond.com as a tool to help run games through discord. Basically my idea was to create a DM or DM tool that could generate a story for you to play or generate the materials you would than use as a DM. Source: 5 months ago
  • How do i start?
Read? Most anything having to do with the class and race/species you want to play in addition to some of the basic rules. dndbeyond.com/how-to-play-dnd can potentially be a great resource so long as you are playing the 5th Edition of the game. It WILL seem like a daunting amount of information, but it is manageable if you limit what you learn to the necessities and learn the rest as you play. If you click on that... Source: 11 months ago
  • Look for D&D Player to join a couple of campaigns - New Players welcome! You will have fun :)
I have a lot of these in hard book formats, but since I want to run adventures using dndbeyond.com it is going to be a good time to pick the digital versions, plus I can share all these with members of my champaigns for free. Source: 11 months ago
  • Baldur's Gate arriving on August 3 on PC!
There are countless videos on YouTube around how they play at the tabletop, but I think the best place to start would actually be dndbeyond.com. You will be locked to the basics, but you can get an idea from character building there because you can create characters and see how stats impact rolls and explore class features.
