We had a few years of Angular with jQuery and before that it was very much jQuery. Jquery was loved because it provided a common and good API across web browsers. Some people use backbone js but that was rare. React is open sourced and maintained by a large organization. It's unlikely to go away due to lack of support (looking at you Dojo). By using react you are not re-inventing the wheel and it is a skillset that will be used for gainful employment with actual companies. Source: over 3 years ago
