Learning to code will come after, spending time with your son writing down ideas might be more fun at first and it's a good time to teach him that games are thoughts first and then coded after. The online tool: ezgif.com is pretty good for short gifs and maybe even videos in some cases. When it comes to free video editing software it gets a bit tricky imo. Most of them are not particulary designed around making meme clips. You could try microsoft clipchamp for windows (11?) for probably the most basic and easy editor around or Maybe kdenlive.org/ Haven't tried it yet. But it is free and people say it...
