  My two sons and I did a RV trip over xmas break. Flew to Las Vegas, rented an RV and drove to Grand Canyon, South Rim. Stayed for 2 days. Drive to Zion, stayed for 2 days.   I think you should start by going to https://rvshare.com or any similar place, and rent an RV for a week or a month to try this out, even if you just lock your house and camp in your driveway.   Others, try using Hotel.com and booking.com in advance, but they are not guaranteed rooms, and almost every year I see people trying to argue with the front desk that they have a reservation.
