You could look at a place like RV Share. Most National Parks will require reservations and that be a challenge depending on where you are going, luckily October is after the summer vacation period and less busy. If you start your trip in Wyoming (which is fairly economically depressed compared with Los Angeles) they might be okay with picking up the rig from a populous place and driving it back for an agreed upon fee.
