Hipcamp allows to break down barriers normally set by private land access by the public. It's an amazing idea and it's probably going to keep expanding around the world because it's a win-win for both campers and landowners (local farms, ranches, etc). I had fantastic experiences and met wonderful people at Hipcamps!

If you're wanting campgrounds then I check recreation.gov and reserveamerica.com. For some state parks, you have to reserve online by midnight the night before. Others you can book same day. Recreation.gov will show you nearby campgrounds that have first come first served but there's always the chance they may be full. Source: 11 months ago

Yes, recreation.gov for reserving most federal spots. Some NP have private vendor operating their campgrounds (e.g. You have to use https://www.xanterra.com/ for Yellowstone). Over here in North Carolina, our state parks use reserveamerica.com and many other states use it too.
