  You may want to try out the regolith-linux DE, its gnome+i3 sort of mixed together. https://regolith-linux.org/ Its a bit unusual in some ways compared to 'normal' gnome and i3.   I use MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid-2014) with Manjaro as OS using i3 as a window manager. It isn't perfect, but I'm thrilled with it.
