You may want to try out the regolith-linux DE, its gnome+i3 sort of mixed together. https://regolith-linux.org/ Its a bit unusual in some ways compared to 'normal' gnome and i3. I am using HP Omen. I easily open it, clean it and change the thermal paste every 3 months (they have detailed guides on YouTube).
