    For building PHP sites, we use [Laravel Valet(https://laravel.com/docs/8.x/valet) (Mac only) but when I first started I used MAMP/WAMP. Laravel Valet sets you up with an Nginx environment where MAMP/WAMP will give you Apache. They both have free options and give you the ability to run a local web server.     Are you running on Mac or windows? If you’re using Mac I would recommend using Valet and then updating the php version according to the documentation at https://laravel.com/docs/8.x/valet. If you’re using windows I think you can just update is via shell commands but I’m not quite sure, haven’t used windows in years :p. Maybe this stack overflow article can help you...
