Pleroma is a lighter-weight alternative. You'll want to replace the front-end with something like Soapbox, however (THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT, JUST A STATEMENT OF FACT) the lead Soapbox dev is a "free speech absolutist" and platforms literal Nazis on his server, so Mastodon communities might decide you are guilty by association if you use Soapbox as your front end. I'm a long-time Ello member (@dickiesaul). Lately I notice many of my posts indicate a comment has been made, but I don't see any either with the post or on the notifications list. The ello.co site isn't much help with support questions. Anyone else seeing this? Source: almost 2 years ago
I'm talking about this platform. I heard about them a few years back when they started, but I think you needed an invite to be part of them. Now it seems you can make an account and share your work without invite. Source: about 2 years ago
Many have suggested sites that are art focused. Let me add ello.co which I think woudl be a good fit for you. It is social media with an intense art focus. Full disclosure, while I love the concept I haven't been able to get myself to use it much. It feels disjointed to me. Source: about 3 years ago
