If the picture is of law quality or scratched try to improve it before colorizing. You can do it using Photoshop or GIMP (HSV contrast, white balance, noise reduction, etc.) or use an online tool. It's a great idea, I absolutely second this. The only problem is that grandma's photo may be too old and faded, in this case you'll have to use something like Photoglory or ImageColorizer to restore it and probably add some color. Source: about 3 years ago
