It's personal preference so I'm not commenting on it. If "file explorer" by your definition is a window with have multiple columns for displaying file hierarchy, file list of current working directory, and file preview, get Pathfinder (https://cocoatech.com/). I love the idea of a 'sheet' where you can add financial data and have it figure out what it needs to calculate.
