I use Documents over the files app for most things. I haven't had a problem zipping. But I have never tried to zip files not already on my iPad. Could work for you though. Source: about 1 year ago

Another option is to download an app onto your iPhone that allows for file transfers using iTunes, like Documents by Readdle.
