This feel like a corporate greed play, on what should be a relatively simple chat application. Slack has quickly become just another enterprise solution in search of shareholder value at expensive of data privacy. Regulation of these companies should be more apparent to people, but sadly, is not. I would recommend https://mattermost.com as an alternative. - Source: Hacker News / 22 days ago
Personally, I rather liked self-hosted versions of these: Mattermost: https://mattermost.com/ Rocket.Chat: https://www.rocket.chat/ Nextcloud Talk: https://nextcloud.com/talk/ Out of those, Mattermost was the easiest to setup (just need PostgreSQL and a web server, in addition to the main container), however not being able to easily permanently delete instead of just archiving workspaces was awkward. Middle managers not adapting. When my old job when remote for Covid, my manager would hold telecons, despite having access to videoconference software with the capability to document and screen share (IT setup BigBlueButton ). He would talk to slides we couldn't see, and we were lucky if he sent them out in email before hand. Source: 12 months ago
Https://bigbluebutton.org/ is a free and open source classroom software. I would stick to indiependent and free software in your situation. Source: over 1 year ago
I haven't used it to stream movies, but I use BigBlueButton fairly regularly for video/voice calls. Source: over 1 year ago
Big Blue Button (https://bigbluebutton.org) is one. We actually used it at work for meetings but it seems they have since pivoted to be for more virtual classroom. I agree though, even that would need decent IT talent to setup and maintain. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
