I used leankit.com for my boards for a long time and worked with their product development teams to get new features in before they went corporate and locked it down and you had to pay for more. Just have a look at Mmm [1] or Kinopio [2] to brighten up your mood. Gopher and FTP servers were fairly soulless as well, so I guess this is just a bit of a nostalgic perspective issue.
