  I use UML quite a bit but it's never really what I'm after, somnething more modern and fluid and gui driven that more people can use. Icepanel [1] looks really cool but I haven't tested it and I'm not sure it really fits my use case.   Conventions exist but they're mostly crap. Along the KISS principle, boxed elements with connecting nodes are the best (most universally understood). In mathematical terms, this is an 'undirected graph', a 'directed graph' is the same but with directionality on the links between nodes.
