The advantage here is that the default rule at law for how a group of developers working together will be treated is partnership, which means joint and several liability. This problem has already been partially solved by Tidelift. He even mentions them in his blog post, they used to send him $1000 a month. Unfortunately it sounds like they're not legally allowed to fund him at the moment because Russia. $1000 a month is not a lot considering the amount of work this guy is putting in, so Tidelift's model may not be sustainable but it's still an interesting business model.
