Secure remote access can be facilitated through encrypted tunnels. VPNs, SSH, Cloudflare tunnel, SOCKS, etc. Can all be secure ways of remotely accessing network resources. What you use will vary, depending upon the type of access you require and/or prefer. I'm sure there are many ways, but I used https://sabre.io/baikal/ to get a CalDAV and CardDAV server on cheap (shared, bog standard) web hosting, and then pointed Thunderbird to it.
