The account portability is probably the biggest problem with the fediverse right now. I finally signed up for Mastodon despite reading little to nothing positive about it on hn. It was easy to use, and the signal to noise ratio was vastly improved from my Twitter experience. However, that lack of account portability means users can, have, and will continue to get cut off. You can use resources such as join-lemmy.org, joinmastodon.org, fedidb.org to find where you want to establish your account. Remember that you can also make an account on other instances if you want to. Do not attach yourself too much to your home instance; it's okay to just make a new account somewhere else if you are unsatisfied with the rules or stability of your home instance. Any stability issues on mastodon.social are noteworthy, but it's important to recognize that it only represents 1,370,000/9,930,000 = 13% of total users, and 387,000/1,790,000 = 21% of Monthly active users. It's pretty stupid to me. I goto threads.net and all I see is a qr code. Not everyone has a smart phone. So it's useless to me if I cannot use it on a browse. Source: 10 months ago
