The account portability is probably the biggest problem with the fediverse right now. I finally signed up for Mastodon despite reading little to nothing positive about it on hn. It was easy to use, and the signal to noise ratio was vastly improved from my Twitter experience. However, that lack of account portability means users can, have, and will continue to get cut off. • [Template] For the month of August, all posts in this subreddit must be links to an instance of a federated software.
You can use resources such as join-lemmy.org, joinmastodon.org, fedidb.org to find where you want to establish your account. Remember that you can also make an account on other instances if you want to. Do not attach yourself too much to your home instance; it's okay to just make a new account somewhere else if you are unsatisfied with the rules or stability of your home instance. • Threads Wants to Join the Fediverse, But Some Mastodon Users Say No Way
Would meta even care? Lemmy is like 3% of the fediverse Https://fedidb.org/. Source: 10 months ago
  • Threads Is Now Live
Any stability issues on mastodon.social are noteworthy, but it's important to recognize that it only represents 1,370,000/9,930,000 = 13% of total users, and 387,000/1,790,000 = 21% of Monthly active users. If you don't use Mastodon, it might be easy to assume that the experience would be filled with blackouts or technical issues, but that's not true, if you pick a good instance. If "picking a good instance"... - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago
  • Mastodon grows more in single weekend than the entire user base of BlueSky
A good resource for visualizing all this is FediDB: https://fedidb.org/. - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago

Thanks for the recommendation of fedidb.org, that'll be useful. Source: 11 months ago

  • Lemmy has now reached a user base of 600,000
If you're still decided to use Lemmy to browse Lemmy or use Kbin to browse Kbin (see 1), use any of the following lists to choose a server (basically a full website): 1 (Lemmy only), 2 (both kbin and Lemmy, just take your pick), 3 (still both, but the least user-friendly). Source: 11 months ago
  • Let's talk about Lemmy
If you can get it working for kbin that'd be awesome as well, kbin.social is the largest instance out of all of the Lemmy/kbin instances according to this. Source: 11 months ago
  • What's going on with 3rd party Reddit apps after the Reddit blackout?
You must have been away for a while. Kbin.social is the second fastest growing of all federated servers (after mastodon.social). Source: 11 months ago
  • Twitter's former CEO has a new app that looks a lot like Twitter | CNN Business
Reddit’s recent fuckups have rocketed the number of users on Lemmy. We’re nearing 10 million Fediverse users and that will just keep growing as more social networks join to replace the old silo’d ones. Source: 11 months ago
  • u/Spez on June 12-14
And privacy-wise, it’s generally better. Lemmy is terrible, just as bad as Reddit and Twitter. However, Mastodon (like 81% of the fediverse) has a fairly good privacy policy, imho. Much better than Reddit’s. So is Kbin’s. Source: 11 months ago
