Some booking websites allow you to search specifically for hostels. I just took a quick glance, and expedia.com allows it. Booking.com doesn't appear so, but maybe I missed something. Source: 12 months ago
Whatever safe bed you can find at this point. You've left it too late to be picky and it's looking like it's going to be the start of the the busiest, boomiest tourist season here in Italy ever. Expect to have to stay very, very, very far from city centers and transit connections or to pay $400+/night on a place. I hear that. higheredjobs.com is a great resource for jobs, both tech a not, in the higher ed world. I started as an online learning helpdesk staffer, went to an ID (instructional designer/faculty trainer), and then went back to the online k-12 world.
