We're commonly doing this with logging, using services such as Loggly or DataDog. We're using managed databases, be it on AWS, Heroku or database-vendor-specific solutions. The nice thing about AWS is that you could use Amazon S3 Glacier storage if you can live with slower retrieval (5-12 hours).
