The editors are basically immediately off limits for anyone who wants to mod the base game rapidly for their own enjoyment. A concept like http://sauerbraten.org/ is interesting, but seems to not have taken off for various reasons. N-Space 2 will let you build on multiple levels of detail. Instead of a single size of cube, there is an adjustable "grid" which scales from 1/16 of a block to 2 blocks.
