Don't underestimate the strength of personal projects. If you ask a professor about their research, I find very often, they ask about things you have done in the past, which sort of feels like shit if youve done nothing huh? Since you have C# experience, take this time to learn more about C++ while you continue to look. While yes, it is very easy to write bad code, it's not a huge deal since you just graduated and are just hacking around.
