I've seen some few super neurotic folks that download non-merged* sets and pick them apart, but most people just d/l the full set and a program like clrmamepro to trim the bulk of the roms off, since it changes so often that it's not worth cherry-picking them by hand. In my opinion the ideal situation would be a backend that any developer could build a frontend to that would suit their approach. For example there are many Retroarch frontends like Highscore, EmulationStation, etc. These all suit the needs for what some person may want. Source: about 1 year ago
