The number one thing to look for are sets that will retire soon. If you buy a set and it doesn't retire for 2 more years then it won't start appreciating in value for 2 years. Lego doesn't formally announce when most sets will retire. (though they do have a 'last chance to buy' section on their site, so keep an eye on that.)
