If you install the DeDRM plugin from Apprentice Alf, you can pull books from Adobe Digital Editions into Calibre (once they're checked out into ADE) and it strips the DRM off them as it imports. Then you can return the book from ADE and it checks back into the library. Source: over 1 year ago

Anyway, try looking around on Alf's blog and maybe you can try MobileRead. Those guys can get very technical. But they are also limited in how much info they can provide. Source: over 1 year ago

  • [Hobby Scuffles] Week of July 25, 2022
🏴‍☠️ Amazon famously deleted paid-for copies of George Orwell's 1984 from individual Kindle devices. For those who wish to buy ebooks, but are only able to buy ebooks that come saddled with DRM protection, there are, ahem, tools for that. And then back up your non-drm books in multiple places. • Other ways to read digital book from Kobo and Amazon?
If you want a eBook from J-Novel Club then you can buy it directly from them and it'll be DRM free otherwise remove the DRM. Source: almost 2 years ago
  • 2021 r/Fantasy Bingo Stats!
The key addition you want for Calibre is Apprentice Alf's tools which automates DRM removal. I always strip the DRM from my titles as part of importing them from whichever store I sourced them into Calibre for library management. That way my library can be easily backed up and loaded onto whatever ereader I'm using now. Calibre also lets you trivially convert your books between all the major formats, personally... • Question About Light Novels on Kindle
There are also 3rd party e-readers. You might have to strip the DRM off the books to use those, but that's not particularly hard with Kobo, Amazon, or Google Play Books (it can be done with B&N, but it's more of a pain). Source: about 2 years ago
  • I counted up how many light novels I purchased in 2021: 206
Kobo is definitely better. They have higher quality images and only rarely pull books (and even then, only because a customer complained - and some of those have been put back), whereas Amazon will pull books whenever they feel like it without any explanation. They also put their ebooks in a standard format - epub - rather than a proprietary one like Amazon, so you don't have to convert books to another format... Source: about 2 years ago
  • Websites for LN?
If you're talking about licensed series, you usually either use the app associated with the store that they were bought from, or if you stripped off the DRM (or bought the book directly from one of the few publishers who sell their books DRM-free), then you use whatever app you feel like which can read epub files (or mobi if you bought it from Amazon and stripped off the DRM but didn't convert the file format).... • Any sites for buying JP novels and sending em to the US?
Also, you might want consider buying e-books rather than physical books to avoid shipping costs (not to mention, as long as you can actually copy-paste the book's text, it makes it easier to look stuff up), though that can get more complicated, because you might need to use a VPN to get around region restrictions, and you might need to do stuff like give a Japanese billing address (though at least some of the... • The Strange Adventure of a Broke Mercenary - Volume 4 - English Cover
If you're looking to buy books digitally, then kobo.com is a good choice, but you can also buy from B&N, Google Play Books, or Amazon (though Amazon has a history of removing LNs and manga that they deem inappropriate). There's also Bookwalker, but unlike the others, there isn't currently a way to remove their DRM, which would mean having to read all of the books you buy from them via their app or their website,... • Plugin not found in the plugin interface. Safe?
I was wondering why is deDRM not found in the "official" plugin window and if I can trust it. I see that a lot of people recommend it. There is a deASMC plugin though. Source: over 2 years ago
  • What ereaders have the best LN/manga choices?
Kobo and B&N are both far better choices in terms of how they handle LNs and manga. AFAIK, B&N has never pulled anything. Kobo has occasionally pulled stuff due to customer complaints, but in at least some cases, the books have come back anyway, and far less stuff gets pulled from there than Amazon. Both Kobo and B&N use epub, though Kobo's DRM is easier to remove. Either way, if you have one and you remove the... Source: over 2 years ago
  • Anyone unable to add the DeDRM plugin?
I've downloaded the zip file from DeDRM Tools 7.2.1 Released. My Calibre is 5.32 [12 Nov, 2021]. Source: over 2 years ago

See https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2021-23311.pdf Under III.A.3, it appears presently legal to use tools such as this: https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/ as long as you are using it for a purpose listed in the exemption. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • What are you getting for free/cheap in Sydney by exploiting a loophole?
For anyone interested, if you borrow eBooks from City of Sydney (or basically any library) via OverDrive or other online stores, as long as you can get it into Adobe Digital Editions you can probably rip out the DRM and read it as God intended. Have a look at Calibre and the DeDRM plugin by Apprentice Alf. I use that to remove DRM from eBooks I borrow from various libraries so I can read them on my Kobo. Just... Source: over 2 years ago

Break ebook DRM, for example using tools like the Calibre ebook conversion plug-in at https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com/. Source: over 2 years ago
  • How to get Calibre and DeDRM working with Kindle for Mac
The DeDRM tools for Calibre should be quite straightforward on Mac if you own a physical e-ink Kindle. If that's you, you can skip straight to Step 5 and ignore everything else. Source: over 2 years ago
